NHL Week 9 Fantasy Hockey Report (2013/14)

Here is my second attempt at a weekly fantasy hockey report. My analysis is based largely on Yahoo and ESPN Standard Leagues where your roster of players competes head to head in several categories (in my league it is G, A, PTS, +/-, PIM, PPP, SHP, GWG, Shots, Hits, Blocks, Faceoff Wins) against another roster of players. It would appear that ESPN's ownership percentages are based more on active leagues, where Yahoo appears to count every league, including inactives. This weekly report is a work in progress, which will evolve over time.

If you have any questions regarding decisions that you are facing in your league, scroll to the bottom of this post and leave a question in the comment section. It will get answered in less than 24 hours (I do have a day job making curling ice and driving a Zamboni). Let me know the scoring parameters of your league, and the decision that you are faced with.

Who you should buy! (players who need to be owned in more leagues)

Ryan Johansen, Clb - He is owned in 14% of both ESPN and Yahoo leagues, and should be owned in over 90%, including 10 team leagues. If he's on your waiver wire, add him now.

Tommy Wingels, SJ - Must be owned even in 10 team leagues. He is off to a great start and needs to be added, with 16 PTS in the first 24 GP. He is +11 with over 50 shots, he will help you in many categories.

David Legwand, Nsh - Owned in 14% of Yahoo leagues and 32% of ESPN, but that number should be at least 75%. He started the season slowly but has been getting better every week to currently find himself 87th overall.

Andrew Shaw, Chi - Ownership 11% in ESPN, 17% in Yahoo, but that number needs to be over 80%. Going forward he is a player to own in every league, every format.

Martin Hanzal, Pho - I'm not sure how he is owned in 100% of ESPN leagues but only 38% of Yahoo leagues, but it should be 100% and 100%. He is one of the best players that most fans have never heard of.

Clarke MacArthur, Ott - He has been playing great on a line with Bobby Ryan and Kyle Turris, and needs to be owned in all leagues, all formats. You may as well ride the wave while this line is clicking.

Jaden Schwartz, STL - He is a player who can be added in 10 team leagues, as he is proving to be a significant contributor on a high scoring offense. He is 5% owned in Yahoo, 35% owned in ESPN, and that number needs to be higher.

Mike Santorelli, Van - He is sustaining production in the top 100, yet his ownership is only 6% in Yahoo and 33% in ESPN. I'm not confident that he will sustain this for the entire season, but ride the wave while there is a wave to ride.

Cody Eakin, Dal - His ownership is just 3% in Yahoo and less than 1% in ESPN, but he is a player who can be owned in 10 team leagues and warrants ownership in the 40% range.

Nick Bonino, Ana - His ownership is just 2% in Yahoo and 15% in ESPN, but this is a guy who is good enough to add in 10 team leagues, so if you are in a deep league and Bonino is available, he is somebody you need to grab (I already did several weeks ago in my 18 team league).

Who you should sell! (players owned in too many leagues)

Brian Campbell, Fla - No longer a must own player in 10 team formats, but still a big enough name that you can get some decent value for him in a trade.

Alex Edler, Van - No longer a must own player in 10 team formats, but still a big enough name that you can get some decent value for him in a trade.

Pascal Dupuis, Pit - He's not putting up the numbers he put up last season, and does not need to be owned in 10 team leagues. Maybe try trading him to the Crosby owner before you drop him.

Dustin Brown, Los - He got paid, and has taken a step back. No longer a must own player in 10 team formats. You can drop him if the right name pops up on your waiver wire.

Matthew Carle, Tam - No longer a must own player in 10 team formats. He is a player that it might be worth shopping before dropping.

Ryan Callahan, NYR - He's not the same player that he was under Torts. His ice time under Vigneault is 3 minutes less per game, so his opportunities are not quite as plentifull.

Tomas Fleischmann, Fla - No points in his last 7 games, he should be dropped in all 10 team leagues. He's droppable even in deeper leagues. You don't want this guy.

Jonathon Huberdeau, Fla - Worth hanging on to in keeper leagues, but if you are in a shallow re-draft league, this is what we call a sophomore slump. He has taken a step back from last season. If you can find a buyer who will give you draft day value, jump all over that.

Joffrey Lupul, Tor - He is injured again, and just cannot stay healthy. Try to find a Leaf fan in your league and sell him for 60 cents on the dollar. Do it now. I am never going to like this guy. He is the new Mr.Glass (previously Martin Havlat).

Zdeno Chara, Bos - I would not advise you to drop Zdeno Chara, but if I owned him in any league, any format, any size, I would be pushing hard to find a buyer. I am quickly losing confidence in the big man, who looks like he's showing signs of slowing down.

Todd Bertuzzi, Det - He might be back soon from injury, but if history has taught us anything, it's to stay away from Tuzzi when his back flares up. I own him in an 18 team league and might drop him outright for Tomas Tatar (infact I just did).
